Finally Visiting Sunnylands: A Desert Dream Worth the Wait

Finally Visiting Sunnylands: A Desert Dream Worth the Wait

I’ve heard about Sunnylands for years.

As a longtime visitor to Palm Springs and the desert, it was always one of those places on my list that I wanted to see but somehow never made it happen. Not because I didn't try—but because getting tickets can be a bit of a challenge.

Here's the thing about Sunnylands: if you want to tour the famous Annenberg estate, you need to plan ahead. Way ahead. The guided home tours often sell out months in advance.

So imagine my excitement when, during a recent desert trip, I happened to check online the week before we left and found a few tickets still available for the 90-minute house tour. I grabbed them immediately.

And I'm so glad I did.

For those who don't know, Sunnylands is the former estate of Walter and Leonore Annenberg in Rancho Mirage. Often called the "Camp David of the West," it has hosted presidents, royalty, diplomats, and some of the most influential people in the world.

But what struck me wasn't the celebrity or political history.

It was the feeling.

The moment we arrived, my jaw literally dropped. The serenity. The scale. The beauty. The way the estate seems to emerge from the desert landscape while still feeling perfectly at home there.

Even if you don't have a ticket for the house tour, you can still visit the stunning gardens, walk the grounds, and browse the gift shop free of charge. It's worth the stop for that alone.

Our tour was led by Hector, a college student studying to become a surgeon. He was phenomenal. His depth of knowledge, passion for the property, and ability to tell the stories behind the estate made the experience even more memorable. I found myself continually impressed by how much history, architecture, and detail he shared throughout the tour.

The home itself is extraordinary. Designed by architect A. Quincy Jones, the estate is a masterpiece of mid-century modern design. From the iconic pink pyramid roof to the sweeping views of the mountains, every detail feels intentional, elegant, and timeless.

But what I loved most was learning about the Annenbergs' vision. This wasn't simply a luxurious desert home. It was designed as a place where conversations could happen, relationships could be built, and ideas could be exchanged. In a world that often feels rushed and noisy, there was something refreshing about that purpose.

As someone who loves architecture, design, history, and of course the desert, Sunnylands delivered on every level.

So if you've ever thought about visiting, consider this your sign.

Just don't do what I did and wait years to go.

And if you're hoping for the house tour, book your tickets early. Unless, of course, you get as lucky as I did.

Trust me—it’s worth the wait.
